“These are true and committed
in leaders in countering trafficking in persons,” said Sabrina Sullivan, Managing Director of The Future Group. “We
hope that the actions of Minister Solberg and the U of T law students will act as inspiration for other people to get involved.”
During his tenure as Minister of Citizenship
and Immigration from February 2006-January 2007, Minister Solberg introduced new measures to grant temporary residence permits
(TRPs) and access to interim federal health care for trafficking victims. These initiatives will help victims recover from
their ordeals and assist with the prosecution of traffickers.
The University of Toronto Faculty of
Law Anti-Trafficking Working Group is composed of law students from the Faculty and is being recognized for their internationally
recognized research published in “Falling Short of the Mark: An International Study on the Treatment of Human Trafficking
Victims”. This report identified best practices and exposed nations who were not meeting their obligations to assist
victims. The report directly helped catalyze action here in Canada as well.
The Future Group is a leading Canadian non-partisan, non-governmental organization founded
in 2000 that specializes in combatting human trafficking and has worked with victims in Southeast Asia, West Africa and Latin America.
